ALLEN PARK — The Detroit Lions are entertaining yet another cornerback on a free-agent visit after trading for one (Carlton Davis) and signing another (Amik Robertson) this week. KPRC-TV reports that this one is Tavierre Thomas, a native of Detroit.
After walking on at Ferris State, Thomas—who had been a zero-star prospect at Allen Academy—became a two-time Division II All-American and the GLIAC defensive back of the year. After signing with Arizona as an undrafted free agent in 2018, he was acquired off waivers by Cleveland before the regular season began.
After that, he developed into one of the league’s best gunners, appearing in 81 games with Cleveland and Houston during the previous six seasons. Thomas played 135 special teams snaps and 352 defensive snaps with the Texans in the previous season, primarily in the slot. In the end, he recorded 51 tackles, one pass defense, and two forced fumbles.
Last season, Texans head coach Demeco Ryans stated of the player, “He plays the style of football I love to see.” He toy with setting his hair on fire. He is physical and swift in the field. We want to see him force fumbles, which he did a great job of doing. T.T. plays ball in a way that I enjoy watching.
At cornerback, the Lions have a lot of bodies.
