CHICAGO — The Detroit Tigers designated right-handed pitcher Miguel Diaz for assignment hours before Opening Day His next destination is unknown.

The Tigers informed Diaz on Tuesday that he wouldn’t make the 2024 Opening Day roster, so the DFA was merely a formality.

But by waiting until the last moment to put him on waivers — something many teams do — the Tigers made it less likely that he would be claimed by another team.

The Tigers had to remove Diaz from the 40-man roster because he is out of options, meaning he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without clearing waivers.

But in this case, even if Diaz clears waivers, there’s no guarantee he’ll remain in the organization.

Diaz has been previously outrighted in his career, meaning he has the right to reject an assignment to Triple-A Toledo this time around. (Players are outrighted to the minor leagues when they are removed from the 40-man roster and clear waivers).

The Tigers have saved Diaz a spot with the Mud Hens, but he might consider other clubs. The Tigers’ bullpen is deep, with 40-man roster relievers like Beau Brieske and Brendan White likely high in the pecking order, followed by non-roster options like Trey Wingenter, Drew Anderson and Andrew Vasquez.

Diaz, 29, has received a September call-up to Detroit in each of the last two seasons. After he allowed just one earned run in 14 innings last September, the Tigers opted to carry him on the 40-man roster through the winter.
