Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has provided conflicting messages regarding star edge rusher Micah Parsons’ absence from voluntary OTAs this spring.
Despite earlier reassurances that Parsons had not “missed anything” by not attending the workouts, McCarthy expressed a more nuanced view this Thursday.
Parsons, who had not been present for the OTAs last week, returned to the team on Wednesday for media day but did not participate in practice sessions.
He was also absent during Thursday’s OTA media availability.
McCarthy acknowledged the value of attending OTAs, saying, “I think any time that you have a chance to be together, it’s an opportunity to improve. Whether it’s in the mental realm, the physical realm and the emotional connection and so forth. It’s a long year. Training camp is really the heightened focus for all of that, but it’s definitely an opportunity that’s been missed [for Parsons].”
Parsons’ absence has fueled speculation about his desire for a long-term contract extension, although ESPN’s Todd Archer reported that this is unlikely to be a pressing issue for the Cowboys right now.
Dallas still holds control over Parsons’ contract through the 2025 season, with an option to extend further if necessary.
