The Kansas City Royals revolving reliever door swung again Thursday.

Relief pitcher Dan Altavilla was placed on the 15-day injured list after leaving Wednesday night’s loss to the Oakland Athletics with discomfort in the eighth inning. The Royals said Altavilla suffered a right oblique strain.

In a corresponding move, 25-year-old Steven Cruz was recalled from Triple-A Omaha.

Cruz has pitched in 10 career MLB games, all coming last year with the Royals. In those 10 games, he pitched 12.2 innings and gave up 11 hits, 11 walks and 7 earned runs.

Altavilla pitched in five games with the Royals before suffering the right oblique strain. The 31-year-old returned to MLB action for the first time since 2021.
