Seth Lugo delivered a dominant performance on the mound, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

Lugo tossed a complete game shutout, retiring the final ten batters he faced and striking out six without issuing a walk. The Royals broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning with a four-run rally, highlighted by key hits from Bobby Witt Jr., Hunter Renfroe, and Maikel Garcia. With the win, the Royals improved to 55-45, securing a sweep and holding the third wild card spot. They will face the Diamondbacks in a three-game series starting tomorrow.

Ninth Inning:

  • In the top of the 9th inning, Tommy Pham lined out sharply to left fielder Dairon Blanco for the first out. Gavin Sheets then grounded out sharply to third baseman Maikel Garcia, who threw to first baseman Salvador Perez for the second out. Finally, Luis Robert Jr. struck out on a foul tip to end the game. Eighth Inning:

  • Bobby Witt Jr. led off with a single to right fielder Gavin Sheets, followed by Vinnie Pasquantino’s single to center fielder Luis Robert Jr., advancing Witt to third. Drew Waters then pinch-ran for Pasquantino. Salvador Perez struck out on a foul tip for the first out. Hunter Renfroe singled to right fielder Gavin Sheets, scoring Witt and moving Waters to third, putting Kansas City up 2-1. Michael Massey struck out swinging for the second out. Maikel Garcia singled to left fielder Tommy Pham, scoring Waters and moving Renfroe to second, extending the lead to 3-1. Dairon Blanco then singled to left, scoring Renfroe and moving Garcia to third, making it 4-1. Blanco stole second base before Kyle Isbel was called out on strikes, ending the inning. Royals 4, White Sox 1.
  • In the top of the 8th inning, Nicky Lopez lined out to left fielder Dairon Blanco for the first out. Andrew Benintendi, pinch-hitting for Nick Senzel, then grounded out to second baseman Michael Massey, throwing to first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino for the second out. Finally, Korey Lee flew out to right fielder Hunter Renfroe, ending the inning.

Seventh Inning:

  • In the bottom of the 7th inning, Michael Massey struck out swinging for the first out after being substituted in for Garrett Hampson. Following a pitching change where Justin Anderson replaced Drew Thorpe, Dairon Blanco singled to left fielder Tommy Pham, advancing Maikel Garcia to third base. Maikel Garcia then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Isbel, who was out at second base, with Blanco moving to second. Adam Frazier struck out swinging for the third out. Royals 1, White Sox 1.
  • In the top of the 7th inning, Andrew Vaughn lined out to left fielder Dairon Blanco for the first out. Eloy Jiménez then struck out swinging for the second out. Finally, Brooks Baldwin popped out to first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino, wrapping up the inning with another three quick outs for Lugo. He’s been dominant through seven.
