The latest edition of SB Nation Reacts brings you questions of frustration regarding the 2024 Yankees. But the larger MLB-wide polls also examine the positive points of this current campaign while running through the top contributors in each league.
The fact there isn’t a shortage of options for this poll is an issue in it of itself. Even though one might argue for higher expectations for Anthony Volpe or Gleyber Torres — and for everything annoying around the Alex Verdugo discussion — the sheer level of disappointment with DJ LeMahieu takes the cake.
To call it just disappointment doesn’t quite do the trick when you’re talking about a .204/.269/.259 triple slash and a 51 wRC+, as not even the most pessimistic fan could’ve seen this coming. You don’t want to go down this route of critique too heavily, and it’s always worthwhile to keep a healthy level of empathy. If anything, the Yankees should’ve cut bait on his contract and not let this drag out for as long as it has.
It’s one thing to stand by a player struggling and putting slightly below league-average numbers, but LeMahieu’s current OPS (.527) is lower than Zack Greinke’s career mark (.598). Greinke was a good-hitting pitcher, but he was still a pitcher.
