Beloved New York Yankees reliever and four-time All-Star Clay Holmes is reportedly set to depart in free agency, with the Cincinnati Reds emerging as a potential landing spot. Holmes, who served as a key piece in the Yankees’ bullpen, faced ups and downs in 2024, including struggles with consistency and a high number of blown saves. However, he rebounded late in the season, showcasing the effectiveness of his signature sinker.

The Yankees are expected to prioritize financial flexibility for other targets, such as pursuing superstar Juan Soto. Holmes’ projected contract, likely in the $20–30 million range over multiple years, appears too hefty for a Yankees team seeking roster restructuring. The Reds, meanwhile, are seen as a team in need of an experienced closer, aligning well with Holmes’ skill set.

Holmes’ departure underscores a broader trend of change for the Yankees, who are likely to see several core players leave this offseason. While Holmes’ leadership and skill are valued, the Yankees are focusing on reallocating resources to address other roster needs.
