It wasn’t always nice, but the Florida Gators hung on to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Tournament by a score of 85-80 in a rough and intense game that lasted until almost 11:30 PM local time in Nashville. The Bulldogs led throughout the majority of the contest, but Florida’s depth and quickness took over in the second half and never let up once they took the lead. The Gators’ victory advances them to face the third-seeded team in the SEC Tournament, Alabama. Florida will be relieved to snap this brief but disappointing streak as this was their first victory in the SEC Tournament since 2021.

Samuel set a record for the most free throw misses in an SEC Tournament game with his incredible 9-23 performance to end the contest. 9 – 23 = 39% is an absurd percentage to go along with a ton of attempts. Although you would obviously prefer to see him shoot a higher percentage, Samuel was playing so well that, despite his struggles, he was left in the game for a large portion of it. However, in the end, they took him out of the game in the closing minutes because they knew Georgia would keep fouling him on purpose. Samuel was a significant scorer and playmaker on the glass in addition to his spectacular free throw misses, but his charity stripes are what ultimately hurt him as a player.

The Gators came in with a plan and knew exactly what the Bulldogs were going to try because they had previously faced Georgia twice this season. To begin with, despite the fact that Russell Tchewa was able to score well against the Gators early in the season, they didn’t send many double teams on his post ups.
