New York Yankees hope to sign wonderkid yet to make debut, Los Angeles Dodgers wanted him…

The New York Yankees have designated a recently-acquired Dodgers pitcher for assignment — and signed another one.

Victor González, who was traded from the Dodgers to the Yankees this offseason, was DFA’d by the Yankees on Friday. In a corresponding move, the team signed former Dodgesr right-handed pitcher Phil Bickford to a Major League contract.

González, 28, was acquired by the Yankees in December in a deal that brought shortstop prospect Trey Sweeney to Los Angeles. González made 27 appearances for the Yankees this year, sporting a 3.86 ERA in 23.1 innings of work.

He’ll now head to waivers, where he’ll hope to find his next home.

As for the corresponding move, the Yankees are taking a chance on a different former Dodger in Phil Bickford. The 28-year-old spent parts of three season with the Dodgers from 2021-23, and was most recently with the New York Mets to end 2023. Bickford had a career 4.11 ERA in 152 appearances with Los Angeles, and a 4.62 ERA in 25 appearances with the Mets last year.

The Yankees signed him and immediately added him to the active roster as they shuffle a bullpen that was greatly taxed this week against the Baltimore Orioles.
