Guardians’ star first baseman revealed the team he wants to retire with…
Tis the season for magic numbers and scoreboard watching. But Guardians manager Stephen Vogt says don’t expect to hear him make a big deal about the standings with just 22 games remaining after Wednesday’s series finale against the Royals.
Vogt will let others keep an eye on the scores while he focuses on the game in front of him.
“It’s pretty simple for me,” Vogt said. “It’s taking each day for what it is. We can’t control what the other teams do. All we can control is ourselves. So even if we do want to scoreboard watch or look at elimination numbers or anything like that, those really don’t matter. What matters is that we show up today, win the game today, and then tomorrow we’ll do the same thing.”
Cleveland entered play Wednesday with a magic number of 20 to clinch an American League Central Division title, and 14 to clinch at least a wild card spot. The Guardians went from a first-place tie with the Royals a week ago to holding a 4 1/2 game lead on the twins and 5 1/2 on KC thanks to winning five of their last six. So don’t expect their focus to change anytime soon.
“We’ve kept that cadence so far,” Vogt said. “Hopefully we can continue to keep that cadence for the next however many games we have left.”
